2024 Cheeseburners Camp Coaching Staff.
The Cheeseburners have partnered with field hockey camp 'experts', Sanctuary Sports (S2) LLC. Since the turn of the century, S2 (formerly Sanctuary Hockey), has brought a fresh, new approach to the world of coaching, redefining expectations and outcomes for all involved. They bring with them superb resources and provide the best field hockey camp experience available in the US. Staff includes [a combination of] vastly experienced British coaches, former international level players, current and former collegiate coaches and players, and current and former High School coaches - all of whom pride themselves on the ability to develop the individual while supporting group needs.
2024 Summer Field Hockey Camp Coaching Bios
CAMP DIRECTOR - Derek 'Degsy' Aspinall
With 30+ years of coaching experience, Degsy prides himself on his ability to develop players from grassroots to international levels (and everywhere in between). He holds coaching accreditations in two continents with qualifications in both England (Level 2 with England Hockey) and the USA (USA Field Hockey - USAFH). Aspinall has been heavily involved in the advancement of Field Hockey since arriving in the US in 2002. Establishing [what is now] his fourth club this side of the pond, he was one of the original members of the USAFH Steering Committee for Club Development (at the USOC). While with the USAFH, he was a National Olympic Pipeline Coach and also served as Futures Program (now NEXUS) Head Coach (Region 8), Selector, Junior Olympic Coach, as well as being chosen to coach USA U21 Elite players. He is the owner of Sanctuary Sports and the President of Cheeseburners Hockey Club. |
HEAD COACH - Nigel Hornsby
Nigel Hornsby is one of the leading youth coaches in the North East of England. He is a Level 2 Certified Coach through 'England Hockey' (EH) with a BSc in Sports Science. He brings with him 25 years of playing and coaching experience which has helped him develop a wealth of field hockey knowledge. Through working within the EH Performance Player Pathway (JDC, JAC, JRPC and HiPac/Tier 2) as well holding head coaching roles at several successful UK-based clubs (Marton Furness HC, Durham City HC, Norton Ladies HC, Newcastle University Ladies, Durham County Ladies) he has developed a modern, forward thinking coaching philosophy. As a player, Nigel was a runner-up in the Regional Championships, and went on to gain a silver medal at the National Championships with Durham City HC. He also played Senior Men's County and was selected to represent the North [of England] Men's O35s. |
CAMP COACH
Sam Schoessow Concordia University Head Coach, Samantha Schoessow, is going into her eigth season with the Falcons. In 2023, Sam is keen to build on what was her best season in program history. Under Schoessow, players have received recognition for their abilities both on and off the field, including All-Region selections, and various SAA awards. Sam was a four-year starter with Alvernia University where she received several accolades including [two-time] All Commonwealth Conference and Second Team All-Region selection. She brings an abundance of field hockey knowledge and is a welcomed addition to the camp staff. |
CAMP COACH
Jordy Smerchek We're excited to announce the addition of Arrowhead High School (AHS) Varsity Assistant Coach, Jordy Smerchek, to the 2023 Camp Coaching Staff. Coach Jordy is entering her 7th season with Arrowhead and is looking to help guide the Hawks to a WHSFHA State Championship this coming season. During Jordy’s time at AHS, nine players have gone on to play collegiate field hockey, two of which have earned NCAA National Championships in Divisions 1 and 2. Smerchek was a four-year starter with Central Michigan University (NCAA D1) where she received several accolades including team captain, the Jane McNamara Scholar Athlete award, 2nd Team All-MAC, and All-MAC Tournament team selection. |
CAMP COACH
Lana Stone Lana has been a regular at Cheeseburners events since inception. She joins us as a second-year camp coach, coming off the back of a superb first season with Kenyon College. Stone registered 8 points in 11 games with the team's highest pt scoring/game rate (0.600). Former captain of the Wisconsin State Champions, University School of Milwaukee (USM), she would represent the varsity program for three consecutive years and received 'First Team All-Conference' as well as the prestigious Tessa Nowakowski Award. Lana has played all across the US with LIFT Field Hockey (where she also serves as a coach). She has represented Milwaukee at many tournaments including the USA Field Hockey (USAFH) National Festival, USAFH National Indoor Tournament, and the Disney Field Hockey Showcase. |

Melbs Brengosz When you talk Wisconsin Field Hockey, there's only one name that comes to mind. Coach Melbs has a long standing tradition at Arrowhead High School and continues her legacy having guided a record number of players from her program into collegiate ball.
